Hidden Architecture Masterpieces

Elena Marchetti January 25, 2024 8 min read

La Fábrica, in the suburbs of Barcelona, is a former cement factory converted by Ricardo Bofill in 1973 into his architectural studio, residence, and garden. He bought the abandoned 1900-era factory for the views of its silos and the surreal contrast between the postindustrial concrete and the lush vegetation Bofill planted between the kilns. The 5,000 m² studio and house are still in use by his firm today, visible from Calle de Joan Carles I in Sant Just Desvern.

These seven buildings are not the Sagrada Famílias of architecture. They are quietly remarkable structures known to architects but not yet to bus-tour itineraries.

Below: address, opening hours, and the angle worth photographing.

Why This Place Matters

La Fábrica, Sant Just Desvern (Barcelona suburb) — Ricardo Bofill's 1973 conversion of an abandoned cement factory into a studio-residence; the exterior is partly accessible by appointment.

Vidhan Bhavan, Bhopal — Charles Correa's 1996 Madhya Pradesh state assembly building, a circular brick-and-stone palace with a central courtyard rising 9 stories.

Säynätsalo Town Hall, Finland — Alvar Aalto's 1952 brick-and-copper municipal building on a wooded island in central Finland; the council chamber rises like a chapel above the council courtyard.

A Short History

Auroville's Matrimandir, India — Roger Anger's 1971 geodesic golden sphere in the experimental township of Auroville; 30 years of construction. Interior open only by booked appointment for meditation.

Therme Vals, Switzerland — Peter Zumthor's 1996 thermal bath complex set into the Alpine hillside; 60,000 hand-laid slabs of local Valser quartzite.

Sagrada Família, Barcelona — yes, the famous one, but the cylindrical Passion-side towers were finished only in 2010 and the central Christ tower will not complete until 2026.

What You Will Actually See

La Fábrica, Sant Just Desvern — tour by appointment via Ricardo Bofill Taller de Arquitectura. Otherwise, view the silos from the train Sant Just stop.

Vidhan Bhavan, Bhopal — guided tours arranged via the Madhya Pradesh tourism office on weekdays.

Säynätsalo Town Hall, Finland — open as a museum daily 11–17, free entry; reachable by short ferry from Jyväskylä.

Therme Vals, Switzerland — open as a working spa (CHF 105 / 3h); book 2 weeks ahead in winter.

Auroville Matrimandir — meditation slots Mon–Sat, book online 2 days ahead; modest dress required.

Vitra Campus, Weil am Rhein (German-Swiss-French border) — campus of factories by Zaha Hadid, Tadao Ando, Frank Gehry, Herzog & de Meuron, all visitable.

Centre Pompidou, Paris — Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers' 1977 'inside-out' high-tech building; the rooftop view is free with a ticket but a queue.

Interesting Facts

A few quick notes on hidden architecture masterpieces before the section below.

These are the details our correspondents most often get asked about by readers planning a trip.

Practical Information

La Fábrica — appointment slots are rare; weekday mornings only.

Vidhan Bhavan — bring photo ID for the security check; cameras inside the chamber restricted.

Säynätsalo — closed Mondays; 30-min ferry from Jyväskylä quay.

Therme Vals — strict no-photography in the baths; locker towels rented separately.

Interesting Facts

  • La Fábrica contains 30 silos and a 4,000 m² studio in the converted 1900-era Sansón Portland cement factory; Ricardo Bofill lived and worked there from 1973 until his death in 2022.
  • Charles Correa's Vidhan Bhavan in Bhopal won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1998 and is one of three Indian buildings to do so.
  • Säynätsalo Town Hall's council chamber was designed by Aalto to evoke a Greek bouleuterion (deliberative assembly hall) and uses 50,000 Finnish hand-pressed bricks.
  • Peter Zumthor's Therme Vals used 60,000 slabs of locally quarried Valser quartzite, each cut to one of three thicknesses to create the layered wall pattern.
  • Auroville's Matrimandir contains a 70 cm crystal sphere at its centre, the largest optically perfect glass crystal ever manufactured.

How To Visit

Barcelona → Sant Just: FGC line L8 from Plaza España, 20 min.

Delhi → Bhopal: 1h30 flight or 8h Shatabdi train.

Helsinki → Jyväskylä: 3h direct InterCity train.

Zurich → Vals: 3h via Chur and post-bus.

Final Thoughts

Architecture rewards visiting the building, not the postcard. The Centre Pompidou's escalator is more interesting than its silhouette.

Of these seven: La Fábrica is the most unique and the hardest to visit. Säynätsalo is the easiest and the most quietly moving.

Take the time to sit in the building. Therme Vals for 90 minutes silent in the wet caverns; Säynätsalo's council chamber for 20 minutes in the wooden gallery — both designs only reveal themselves slowly.
